Course Description
The course provides an experiential introduction to the
theory and practice of Dramatherapy as a foundation for professional training.
This programme may be of particular interest to those working in the caring
professions and/or for those who have a personal/professional interest in the
therapeutic value of the drama and theatre processes.
Students are actively encouraged through the practical
work to develop a greater awareness of self and others and the group process.
Students will be introduced to the basic theories of psychology and appropriate
eclectic models in psychotherapy as well as essential drama and theatre skills.
Much of the learning will take the form of experiential workshops and the art of
the dramatic process. Teaching also consists of lectures, video work and group
discussions.
Students have the choice to complete the modules at
intermediate or advanced level. This certificate is accredited by Worcester
University
as equivalent to 40 credit points at Level 5 or 6 and is awarded as a
University Certificate in Dramatherapy on a pass/fail basis.
The certificate itself does not constitute a license to
practice
The programme runs over five weekends
and a Spring School and consists of 3 main areas of study:
Drama and Theatre skills,
Dramatherapy ;-Various Models
Clinical
Application.
Theatre Skills
An introduction to the many aspects of
theatre and performance related skills including Voice and
Movement, Improvisation and an exploration of text and its
relationship to performance and therapy.
Dramatherapy
Emphasis will be on the Theatre model of
Dramatherapy, Theory and Practice. Also an introduction to The
Sesame approach and The Developmental Model. Practical work will
focus on personal
development within the group process. The group will explore
Dramatherapy in the following modes:
- Development - Embodiment Projection,
Role
- Ritual - Myth and metaphor
- Performance - to understand the
healing nature of the artistic experience
Theory
Students are introduced to developmental
Psychology models which informs the practice of Dramatherapy and
the role of psychological intervention in the Arts Therapies.
Additional relevant topics such as Movement, Psychodrama, Mask,
Forum and Playback Theatre, and Voice work are also included to provide a rich
foundation for the use of drama as a healing medium.
Course Tutors
Pete Bailie
has worked extensively as an actor – notably with the David
Glass Ensemble and the Oxford Stage Co. He has been a
movement director for operas at the Lyric, Hammersmith and
Sadlers Wells, and has taught extensively at drama schools and
universities, including Central, The Drama Studio, The Bristol
Old Vic Theatre School and the University of Bristol. His
company, VOX Coaching, provides communications training to a
range of businesses and universities
Tracey Cavalier-
Trained as a professional theatre performer in the late 80’s working for
a number of years before training as Dramatherapist. She works
mainly with people with learning disabilities and is also an
acting member of the Bristol Playback Theatre which performs in
and around the South West.
Phil Clarke
– is a professional mask maker who has worked with a variety of
theatre groups. He has travelled worldwide to study mask making
and the use of masks in performance. He also creates his own
masks using natural materials to form a series of spirit masks
linked to the Dartmoor landscapes.
Roya Dooman –
Has been a Dramatherapist for 17 years,
working with children and families with emotional and
behavioural issues in schools and community settings. She
is the co founder and therapist of Circle of Life Activity
Programme for bereaved children and families affected by HIV.
She is also a Dramatherapist for children with Autistic Spectrum
Disorders and offers Dramatherapy training to teachers, parents
and counsellors in England and overseas.
Colin Edwards
– is a drama teacher. He has worked in schools and colleges with
adults and young people both in this country and New York. He is
presently teacher of Central’s Junior Television Workshop in
Birmingham. He has also been a guest tutor with the Institute of
Dramatherapy for many years.
Martin Gill
– is a jointly trained Dramatherapist (Sesame) and BPA
UKCP registered Psychodrama practitioner. From 1987 he worked
full time for Social Services establishing an Arts Therapies
Department. He has developed training seminars and client groups
for the probation and nursing service and Police Child
Protection. He is now in private practice running a training
partnership called Holistic Health Services based in the South
west of England.
Tone Horwood
is a Dramatherapist and
Psychotherapist working with a humanistic perspective in private
practice in Bristol. He has a background in the NHS and the
Probation Service and has taught non-qualifying courses in
Dramatherapy and groupwork skills both here and overseas.
Dr Sue Jennings-
has been a performer and therapist
for over 40 years. Her innovatory theory and method
‘Embodiment, Projection, Role’ is used worldwide for
Dramatherapy practice and research. She has written over a dozen
books on theatre and therapy.
Dawn Miller –is
a state registered Dramatherapist, experience in mental Health
and behavioural problems. She is working in and around the South
West with her own private practice. Dawn has a particular
interest in the work of Joseph Campbell, and has trained with
Paul Rebilot who pioneered the ritual theatre approach to The
Hero’s Journey’. Dawn was the winner of the ICG National Careers
Award for the category ‘Initiatives Focussing on Social
Inclusion’.
Bernadette
O’Brien(RSA Dip VMT)is a qualified
practitioner of Voice Movement Therapy, having trained at the
London Voice Centre. She regularly holds voice workshops in
community and educational establishments and runs a private
practice where she offers individual sessions and freelances as
a Voice Consultant to Theatre Companies. She is also an actor
and director (originally trained at Rose Bruford College) and is
currently Associate Artist for The Theatre Centre in London.
Rachel Perry
– Director and Founder of the Dramatherapy Certificate
Course in Stroud .
Trained and worked as a professional dancer and actress before
qualifying as a Theatre Director in 1988 and as a Dramatherapist
in 1992. She runs workshops and training programmes for
businesses, small groups, and individuals, and offers in-house
consultancy for Dramatherapy in the UK. She has worked
with many different client groups within mental health,
including those recovering from addiction and eating disorders. Rachel
is also an experienced Counsellor and Coach in Communication and
Presentation skills and provides supervision for trainee Dramatherapists.
Rose Thorn
has worked with people young and older, able-bodied and
disabled, all ranging from socio-economic,
ethnic and cultural backgrounds, from various settings
including: daycentres, psychiatric hospitals, colleges and in
the community. She currently works in a Medium Secure unit with
male and female offenders who experience mental distress and in
a therapeutic Artists community. Rose is a committed performer
and conductor in Bristol Playback Theatre and is one of the
founding members of Breathing Fire
- Bristol Black Women's Playback Theatre Company.
Assessment
One critical reflective account of 2000 at
level 5 or 3.000 words at level 6, a practical theatre presentation, plus
tutor's final appraisal. Personal journals are to be kept
throughout.

considered in the light of personal, professional and educational experience. No
formal qualifications are required for entry - commitment and enthusiasm is
considered more important.

Non residential £420
includes supper on Friday night, and lunch and refreshments both
Saturday and Sunday.
Residential
: £680 includes all bed & breakfast accommodation (based
on two sharing) for Fri & Sat night, all meals and refreshments
Saturday and Sunday plus Friday night supper on arrival.
If
a single room is required, an additional supplement of £20
per weekend will be charged.
Payment;
In exceptional circumstances, payment can be made in two
instalments. A letter stating financial circumstances and
anticipated payment dates will be required. This arrangement
requires that total fees are still payable even if students decide
to pull out of the course by the second instalment date. Interest
will be charged on late payments.
If you have to cancel
We
recommend you take out your own insurance in case you have to cancel
through illness or unforeseen circumstances .If you have to cancel,
let us know as soon as possible: cancellation charges are dependant
on how far we know in advance of the course. As a general rule,
cancellation charges are as follows: If you cancel more than six
months before a course, deposit and any fees paid are refundable. If you
cancel less than 3 months before the course, the deposit is not
refundable but any paid course fees will be refunded.
Fees cannot be refunded once the course has begun. Any fees
outstanding after the start of the course will also be due even if
students decide not to continue.
We suggest insurance is taken out to cover against possible
withdrawal from the programme. Please ask for details.

The venue for the Dramatherapy Certificate course is Hawkwood
college in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Hawkwood is a residential centre of learning in
the beautiful and peaceful Cotswold Valleys of England. It offers a
wide range of short courses, from music, science, arts and crafts to
personal development. It is set in 42 acres of beautiful gardens, woods and
fields, with its own spring water, and is in an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty.
